Davion Mitchell
Mitchell is Miami's starting point guard in the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, and the rest note from the October 11 preseason game has no bearing on his regular-season role.
Role
He has started alongside Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. That group started the preseason opener, and Underdog NBA reported it as the lineup for a Friday game (hottakes.com, about two days before today). He played 34 minutes in the Oct. 29 win over the Hawks, with 10 points, 10 assists and 2 steals (RotoWire via CBS). Through four games he averaged 18 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists, shooting 49.1 percent overall and 33.3 percent from three (Roundtable, today). Backups named in the preseason coverage include Dru Smith, Ryan Conwell and Bez Mbeng. I did not find a published minutes or usage split, and I did not fetch a live depth chart. The rest day was a whole-starting-unit rest, per RotoWire on Oct. 10, so it does not suggest a back-to-back or load-management pattern.
Roundtable argues he has arguably been Miami's second-best player behind Giannis early on. It says he has steadied the point guard spot despite the 1-4 start, and that it would be hard to change the position if he keeps playing this way. RotoWire flagged a larger role after Tyler Herro was traded in the Giannis deal. His defense and playmaking keep him in the backcourt rotation.
Miami started 1-4, and the same Roundtable piece says the team did not fully address the point guard position. It notes rumors about targeting guards such as Kyrie Irving. His preseason shooting was poor (1-5 in the opener), and he went 5-12 with 0-3 from three in the Hawks game. The starting five pairs Giannis and Bam with questionable spacing, which could make the lineup unstable. His own contract is also unsettled: he is set to hit free agency this offseason (Roundtable).
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether Miami keeps him as the long-term starting point guard or goes after a higher-profile guard if the slow start continues. I found no source that disputes his current role.
