Dennis Schröder

Consensus #269 · PG98 · tier 7Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Schröder is Charlotte's starting point guard while Coby White is out with a calf injury, and he moves back to a backup role when White returns.

Role

Through three games he has started, averaging 16.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 31.0 minutes (FantraxHQ, Oct. 26). Heavy.com notes he has played over 35 minutes in two of the three. His 20-minute game was a 128-81 loss to Atlanta on Oct. 23, and he played 38 minutes against Miami on Oct. 24. ESPN's spin says his value holds as long as White is out. CBS Sports and Yahoo framed him preseason as White's backup, and coach Charles Lee talked about using him to create shots late in games. I did not find a published minutes split for the White-healthy rotation, a back-to-back rest plan, or a return date for White.

The case for

With White sidelined and no timetable for his return, he is the primary playmaker in the starting lineup. He has produced early, including a 25-point game against Miami on 8-of-17 shooting with six rebounds and four assists. FantraxHQ ranked him its top Week 2 streamer. Heavy.com also says he is expected to stay the primary point guard for the rest of the season, though that claim is not sourced and conflicts with the White-return framing elsewhere.

The case against

He is 33 and was a low-usage backup after joining Cleveland last season. One CBS Sports/Rotowire note called him merely a streaming option when his role is elevated. The role depends on White's absence. His efficiency has swung from game to game: 1-of-5 for four points against Atlanta, and three turnovers or more in each of the three games. Rotowire and ESPN both describe the value as low-end.

Where analysts split

The open question is how long Schröder stays a starter. Heavy.com says he stays the primary point guard all season. ESPN, FantraxHQ and the preseason CBS and Yahoo framing tie his starting role to White's calf injury, with White the starter once healthy. No source I found says whether Schröder keeps starting or how his minutes drop after White returns.
