Fred VanVleet
VanVleet is Houston's starting point guard coming off an ACL tear. He is managed by sitting one game of each back-to-back, so his availability will be uneven all season.
Role
Udoka confirmed him as the starting point guard, alongside Durant, Thompson, Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. (Rockets Wire via Yahoo, about 25 days ago). The Athletic's Will Guillory reported that he sits one game of each back-to-back early in the season, and Houston plays 13 back-to-backs. Udoka has not put him on a minutes restriction. RotoWire's earlier note said he might begin on one, and that is unconfirmed. He played 24 minutes in his first regular-season game, per the Fox Sports/RotoWire page. Smart started in his place on rest nights, but Smart's own forearm issue meant Reed Sheppard made the spot start in Atlanta on Saturday (640 WXSM, Oct 25). Smart was questionable for Monday and VanVleet was not on Houston's injury report. A usage rate is not in what I found. Last season's line in our data (2 GP) conflicts with reporting that he missed all of 2025-26, so I am not using it.
Udoka calls the pairing with Smart a luxury. VanVleet has 26 assists and one turnover across three games, preseason included, and 11 assists with no turnovers on opening night despite shooting 2 of 8. He is cleared and playing without a minutes cap. He started the previous two seasons as the starter, and Houston's depth lets the staff rest him without much penalty.
He admitted the knee still feels different from before the injury and expects an adjustment period. He is 32, on an expiring $25 million deal, and sits out half of each back-to-back, so his games played will be capped. Sheppard, Smart and Thornton all compete for guard minutes. Any knee setback lifts Sheppard or Smart into the lead role.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether the back-to-back rest is a short early-season measure or a lasting schedule. Commentators also split on whether Sheppard, who is outscoring Smart in the preseason, should take the starting job on rest nights or even full-time. Udoka has so far chosen Smart for rest nights and VanVleet for the full-time role.
