Jalen Brunson

Consensus #130 · PG48 · tier 9Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Brunson is the Knicks' starting point guard and lead ball handler, and the coverage I found says nothing about that changing. Brown may trim his minutes somewhat from last season.

Role

Starting five per SI's projection and NY Post/nyknicksnews coverage: Brunson, Hart, Bridges, Anunoby, Towns. Brown told the group their roles are established (nyknicksnews, about 24 days old). A source for this column says he averaged 35 minutes in 74 games last season. SI's season-opener projection (about 12 days old) has him closer to 32 or 33 per game in the first few weeks, with a heavier load possible if the early schedule demands it. Brown staggers Brunson and Towns, and the Knicks' own numbers show the two shared the floor while one sat for only 290 minutes last season. Brunson-McBride-Shamet-type bench units are the other pairing mentioned. Backup guard minutes belong to McBride, Shamet and Alvarado in SI's rotation piece. I found no report that he sits back-to-backs. The wire rest note refers to a preseason game, and the opener has apparently already been played, so I treat that note as stale for in-season planning.

The case for

He is the undisputed engine of a title-defending team. Brown says the five starters have secure roles and will play through mistakes. Brunson runs the first quarter and is staggered with Towns so one star is nearly always on the floor. He had 30 points and 13 assists in a late-season win over Atlanta, and the Knicks' offense runs through him.

The case against

Brown's starters play fewer minutes than they did under Thibodeau, and SI projects a dip to roughly 32 or 33 per game. Brunson played only about 15 minutes in the preseason opener (a Substack write-up). That write-up also refers to his repaired wrist, and I did not find details on it. SI's Game 1 piece said the starting five's offense hit a new low on opening night, and ball handling is being spread to Bridges and Anunoby. Both could cut into his usage. The shorter minutes, the wrist and the extra ball handlers are the risks.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is about how much Brown trims Brunson's minutes and how he staggers him with Towns. SI projects 32 to 33 minutes early. The earlier 35-minute average in 74 games is the other reference point. Brown's stated preference is to keep at least one of the two stars on the floor. Whether he keeps them paired when a wing guards Towns is an open question (fanrecap).
