James Harden

Consensus #109 · PG42 · tier 9Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Harden is a starting guard next to Donovan Mitchell, and the main open question is how the two share the ball at age 37.

Role

Underdog NBA lineup alerts, relayed by hottakes.com, have Cleveland starting Harden, Mitchell, Peyton Watson, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen on Oct. 28 and on a Saturday game (the Saturday item was published about a day before this check). I found no minutes or usage figures for this season and no back-to-back rest plan. Behind him, one offseason roster listing (Central Oregon Daily, about 73 days old) names Craig Porter Jr. and Tyrese Proctor at point guard. I did not read a current depth chart or rotation tracker. The wire note says an ankle issue kept him out of a preseason game. I found nothing newer on that ankle, so its effect on his workload is unknown.

The case for

Optimists point to last year's fit. Cleveland went 21-9 after he debuted, per ESPN. A Yahoo/Yardbarker preview says he averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 43.5% from three in 26 regular-season games for Cleveland. ESPN also says he led the NBA in isolations run and ranked second in made step-backs. They argue a full season with Mitchell and Watson lets him run the offense while Mitchell is not left to carry everything.

The case against

Skeptics point to his age (37), the two-big starting five, and two ball-dominant guards sharing one ball. A Yardbarker preview says he has to avoid another playoff disaster. Cleveland was swept by the Knicks in the conference finals. The hottakes.com pieces describe the lineup as a usage-rate experiment, and one notes the team was trying to bounce back from a rough stretch. His ankle issue adds some doubt about availability, though I found no update.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is about where he plays, not whether he plays. Sports Illustrated's Cavs site argues for bringing him off the bench to lead the second unit, so he has full control away from Mitchell. Most other projections and the actual lineup alerts I found have him starting. Another preview, from The Big Lead, lists him at small forward with Mitchell at point guard. That is a positional-label difference and does not change his place in the starting five.
