Josh Giddey
Giddey is the Bulls' starting point guard and primary playmaker, and he has opened the season with heavy assist and rebound work and very poor shooting.
Role
NBC Sports (Oct. 23) says he keeps his usual starting point guard role, and Tre Jones is the most likely replacement if he sits. The Yahoo/Heavy opener report has him starting alongside Norman Powell, Caleb Wilson, Matas Buzelis and Jalen Smith. His minutes were 24 in the opener loss to Toronto and 25 in the win over Milwaukee, per NBA.com's player page. I did not find a published usage rate. A July piece from Pippen Ain't Easy (about 110 days old) projected a point guard minutes battle with rookie Dailyn Swain, but it said not to expect an immediate change to his starting status. I found no current report that Swain is cutting into his minutes. The wrist sprain was cleared for Friday, and I found nothing newer on it.
He is the lead creator in the starting group and keeps producing even when his shot is off. Fox Sports (Oct. 23) noted he led Chicago in assists in the opener despite shooting 1-of-10, and NBA.com has him at nine assists against Milwaukee. NBC Sports also has a headline of eight boards and 10 assists for him. If the shot comes back, the passing and rebounding floor is already there.
The scoring and efficiency are bad. He shot 1-of-10 against Toronto (2 points, 0-for-4 from three) and 3-of-9 against Milwaukee (6 points). Heavy reported he was a minus-40 through 21 minutes in the opener, and he has five turnovers in one stretch. Pippen Ain't Easy noted he led the 2025-26 Bulls in turnovers at 3.6 per game. Fox Sports also links a piece arguing he is stuck in a middle ground the Bulls can no longer justify, and says Chicago reportedly discussed him with Minnesota in the 2026 offseason. A trade or role change is therefore possible, though nothing confirms one.
Where analysts split
Whether Giddey's value holds up if his shooting stays poor, or whether the coaching staff and front office, who did not acquire him, shift minutes toward other guards such as rookie Swain. The sources I found are mostly national aggregators and fan sites, and I found no beat-writer or Athletic piece confirming any change.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
