Keon Ellis
Ellis is a stopgap starting guard for Brooklyn who supplies steals and some threes, and reporting expects rookie Mikel Brown to take the job once his restrictions lift.
Role
He started the opener against Charlotte on October 21 and played 34 minutes, including all 12 of the fourth quarter (Yahoo Sports). He played 22 minutes at Cleveland on October 24 (ESPN game log) and 23 in a loss to Indiana (RotoWire). RotoWire says he has had multiple steals in three straight games. CBS and RotoWire call him the starting shooting guard "in the interim" while Brown is eased in. A Roundtable preseason projection had Ellis and Egor Dëmin as the starting backcourt at about 28 minutes for Ellis. It also expected his minutes to fall, with Brown and Nolan Traoré competing. Coach Jordi Fernández said "nobody has guaranteed minutes." I did not read a current starting-five page or a usage rate, so I have no figure for either.
Ellis has a clear defensive niche and has been producing steals in every game so far. He played a heavy opening-night workload, and Fernández praised his composure. His three-point shooting suits the system, and Roundtable notes his history with Dëmin in Sacramento. If Brown's restrictions last or Brown struggles, Ellis keeps a starter's minutes.
The reporting expects Brown to overtake him for a starting spot once the restrictions lift. Roundtable notes Ellis has never averaged more than 25 minutes a season, and it expects his playing time to shrink as Brown and Traoré compete. His scoring has been thin so far: 7 points on 3-of-7 shooting in the opener, then 6 points on 28.6% shooting at Cleveland. CBS called him at best a last-round flyer for steals after a quiet preseason start.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is how long Ellis holds the starting job and the 25-plus minutes that come with it. RotoWire and CBS expect Brown to take over once his restrictions are lifted, but no timeline has been reported. Roundtable's preseason view was that Ellis starts but fades as the season goes on. None of this has been confirmed by the club.
