Keyonte George
George is Utah's lead ball handler and a top scoring option through three games, and the open question is how he shares the backcourt with rookie Darryn Peterson and cuts down on turnovers.
Role
Through three games (ESPN game log, checked Oct 26) he played 29, 32 and 33 minutes and scored 22, 19 and 24 points. Against the Lakers on Oct 25 he had 10 assists and nine rebounds, and in the Oct 23 win over New Orleans he had 10 assists. SI called him the Jazz's lead initiator against the Lakers. RotoWire's preseason note projected 30-35 minutes as the starting point guard because Utah added no point guards in the offseason. I did not read a confirmed starting five. Peterson, the No. 2 pick, is the other main creator. No back-to-back rest plan turned up in what I read.
He signed a 5-year, $157.5M extension (CBS) and is the clear lead guard. CBS's season-opener recap says he should stay among the team's top offensive options despite adding Peterson. He has played 29 to 33 minutes in each game so far, led Utah in assists in the opener, and had double-digit assists in two straight games.
Turnovers are the concern. He had six against New Orleans and six against the Lakers. Yahoo's headline summary says he has to move from pure scorer to elite facilitator while managing costly turnovers. Peterson's arrival could also split creation duties and usage. Utah is 1-2 and was weak defensively in the opener, so the team context is shaky.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether George can be an efficient lead facilitator alongside Peterson, or whether his turnovers and the shared ball handling cap his value. I found no analyst disagreement on his minutes.
