LaMelo Ball

Consensus #136 · PG51 · tier 9Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

LaMelo Ball is Minnesota's starting point guard after the offseason trade from Charlotte, and he looks set to keep real offensive freedom next to Anthony Edwards, though only two games of evidence exist.

Role

Listed as the starting point guard in the expected lineups I found. Fear the Sword's Cavs preview (dated today) lists him with Edwards, McDaniels and Gobert, but that list names McDaniels twice and has no fifth starter. A report relayed by hottakes.com (also dated today) says Underdog NBA announced Ball, Edwards, McDaniels, Kuminga and Gobert for Sunday's game against Toronto. NBA.com's player page has him at 29 minutes in his Minnesota debut, a 131-106 win over Miami on Wednesday. ESPN's depth chart page shows Bones Hyland and Ayo Dosunmu behind him, but it was indexed long ago and I did not fetch it, so treat that as unverified. I did not find a usage rate or any back-to-back rest plan. The wire note about a rest day before the Bulls preseason finale is a preseason item and does not by itself show a pattern. He played only 3 games last season, so there is little recent workload to compare against.

The case for

ESPN's fantasy note on his debut says he finished second on the team in scoring alongside Edwards' 45-point game. It also says his 13 three-point attempts suggest he keeps considerable offensive freedom, and that his six assists against one turnover were encouraging. Minnesota is 2-0 and the offense has looked fine with him in it. Preseason coverage described him as a singular player who drove a historically strong Charlotte offense.

The case against

The sample is two games. A hottakes.com item has him at 16.5 points and 5.5 assists through two games, which is a thin source. He shares the ball with a high-volume star in Edwards. ESPN's note says his long-term ceiling depends on how consistently he handles playmaking in a new setting. He played only 3 games last season, so durability and workload are open questions, and I found no current report that addresses them.

Where analysts split

The open question is how the playmaking and shot load splits between Ball and Edwards over a full season. Coverage so far is early and descriptive, not a formal analyst split. The fifth starter also looks unsettled: Kuminga appears in one report, and the Fear the Sword list is garbled.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
