Marcus Sasser

Consensus #262 · PG96 · tier 9Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Sasser is a Dallas backup guard behind Kyrie Irving who has played well in his first regular-season game and will start when Irving sits, but the bench guard job is still contested.

Role

Backup point guard behind Irving. In the Oct 21 opener, a 128-110 loss to Houston, he played 24 minutes off the bench and scored 17 points on 6-8 shooting, including 4-5 from three (Rotowire via CBS and ESPN). NBC Sports' Oct 24 note says Irving (knee) was downgraded to doubtful for the second night of a back-to-back against the Spurs, and that Sasser would start at point guard with Walter Clayton Jr. getting more bench minutes. A Yahoo piece from the offseason named Ryan Nembhard and rookie Sergio De Larrea as other candidates for the backup job. I did not read a current depth chart or minutes tracker, so I can't give a usage rate or a settled rotation. The last-season line we hold (3 GP) does not match Yahoo's report of 38 games at about 12 minutes per game with Detroit, so I have not used it.

The case for

Coach Dusty May praised his cutting, shooting, decision-making and defensive effort, and called out "hidden plays" that help the offense (Rotowire camp note). He was productive in his Dallas debut and Rotowire/ESPN calls him poised to keep a steady role behind Irving. When Irving rests or is hurt, he is the starter, as the NBC note shows. Yahoo described him as a floor-spacing off-ball guard whom Dallas needs.

The case against

He fell out of Detroit's rotation last season, passed on the depth chart by Daniss Jenkins, and Yahoo put him at about 12 minutes per game over 38 appearances. He missed the first three preseason games with a hip or groin issue, which Rotowire and Fox describe as adductor tightness. May said in camp that Dallas had not settled on a starting five or set units. Clayton, Nembhard and De Larrea are all in the guard mix, and one 24-minute game is a small sample.

Where analysts split

Whether Sasser holds a fixed bench-guard role once Irving is healthy, or the minutes get split with Clayton and the other young guards. Sources agree on the starting job when Irving is out. The open question is how much Irving plays and how the backup minutes are shared. Rotowire and ESPN lean toward a steady role, while Yahoo's offseason framing and May's camp comments describe an open competition.
