Mike Conley

Consensus #138 · PG53 · tier 9Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Conley is a 39-year-old emergency point guard and locker-room veteran on a one-year deal, with almost no rotation role so far this season and a wire note that he is not expected to play against the 76ers on Friday.

Role

He has played once this season, 7 minutes against Chicago on Oct. 26 (ESPN and NBA.com game logs), and also played 18 minutes in a preseason game at Cleveland. Fox Sports (about 10 days old) says he is not expected to have a significant rotation role and will be emergency depth, with occasional minutes and perhaps a few starts. Early rotation coverage (CelticsBlog, 8 days old) has Pritchard playing starter-level minutes off the bench, with White, George, Tatum, Walsh and Robinson starting. Crafted NBA's depth chart, seen only in a search snippet that I did not fetch, projected Conley about 11 minutes behind Pritchard. Hugo Gonzalez is the other guard-wing option. I found no reporting on back-to-back rest plans.

The case for

Preseason expectations were for a backup point guard role of 15 to 20 minutes as a low-usage passer and play-caller (SI, July, about 4 months old). He started the first preseason game and again when White rested, and Fox says he could get intermittent minutes or a few starts if guards miss time. He also played 18 minutes in the preseason game at Cleveland.

The case against

He averaged 4.5 points on 33.5% shooting in 18.4 minutes last season with Minnesota, career lows (Audacy). He has played just 7 minutes in the regular season. Pritchard is soaking up the backup guard minutes, and the Friday wire note points to more DNPs. Fox describes his main job as mentoring a young roster.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement that he is a depth piece. The only open question is how much he plays as the 15 to 20 minute backup that SI projected in July, against the 11 minutes or fewer that Crafted NBA's projection and Fox's current coverage suggest, and that turns on whether Pritchard or White miss time. I found no source arguing for a larger role now.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
