Payton Pritchard

Consensus #97 · PG38 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Pritchard is Boston's sixth man by the club's own choice. He is also one of its main shot creators now that Jaylen Brown has been traded, and he is likely to close games.

Role

He came off the bench in the season opener against Detroit, and Jordan Walsh started next to Derrick White (Heavy, about 12 days old). Coach Joe Mazzulla said people overrate who starts and that closing the game matters more. Pritchard said a starter is someone who plays 30-plus minutes and finishes games (Yahoo/Heavy, Oct. 18). I found no published minutes or usage figures for this season and no rotation tracker, so I am not giving any. The wire note says he sat out the preseason finale for rest, and I found no later report of a rest plan or back-to-back policy. Baylor Scheierman, Sam Hauser and Hugo Gonzalez are named as other bench options (Chowder and Champions, about 5 days old). Last season he started 50 of the 79 games he played and averaged 17 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds (Celtics Wire via Yahoo). Our data card shows a different games-played figure, and I have not tried to reconcile the two.

The case for

Brown is gone, so the team needs shot creation, and Pritchard's output rose when Brown sat (CelticsBlog, Sept. 7). As the 2025-26 starter he averaged 16.9 points and 5.3 assists on 45.6/34.8/86.7 shooting (Chowder and Champions). Optimists say he is a top-5 Celtic who deserves starter usage, and even at the least he should keep late-game minutes. Staggering his minutes would keep him on the floor with both starters and the second unit.

The case against

Skeptics, mostly writing about the team's fit, say the bench needs his scoring. He has been a sixth man for most of his career, and a Chowder and Champions writer argued in August that Boston should keep him there. The coaching staff has stated that starting is not the point. Last year he gave up the starting job to Scheierman before Jayson Tatum returned. Boston's veteran additions, Paul George and Mitchell Robinson, could also limit his shots.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Pritchard moves into the starting five or stays the sixth man. Commentators split on it: CelticsBlog's Sept. 7 debate and a Chowder and Champions piece from about 5 days ago say he should start, while another Chowder and Champions piece from August says he should stay on the bench. The team has chosen the bench for now. Analysts also disagree on how much his minutes and shots change either way, and none of the coverage I found settles that.
