Quenton Jackson
Jackson is a depth guard who is filling in as the Pacers' backup point guard while T.J. McConnell is out, and his minutes will shrink if McConnell returns.
Role
The Pacers' coach, Rick Carlisle, used Jackson as the backup point guard in the season opener against New Orleans because McConnell was out with a hamstring strain (8points9seconds, about three days before today). Carlisle said he "earned his way into crunch time" in that game. A Yahoo piece from about five days ago says Carlisle expects him to play both point guard and shooting guard. I found no published minutes or usage figures for this season. As of the NBC Sports and Fox Sports pages indexed in the last few days, McConnell had not made his season debut. Rookie Braden Smith and Kam Jones also appear in the guard coverage, but I did not find reporting that lays out how the work is split among them. I did not fetch a depth chart or rotation tracker, so I cannot say who starts at either guard spot.
Carlisle praised his late-game play in the opener. Beat coverage says he is earning a longer leash and is the only playable backup guard while McConnell is out. His contract became fully guaranteed for 2026-27, and Carlisle has framed him as a full-time roster player.
His role is tied to injuries. McConnell is the projected backup point guard when healthy, and the 8points9seconds piece says missing time is a question of when, not if, for a 34-year-old. Braden Smith and Kam Jones add competition, and Jackson's own camp hamstring strain (reported by Fieldhouse Files' Scott Agness via fanrecap) adds some risk. The opener coverage called his box score unspectacular and praised only his plus-minus.
Where analysts split
The open question is how much of the backup guard work he keeps once McConnell returns, and whether Smith or Jones passes him. I found no analyst piece arguing either side directly. This is my inference from the roster coverage.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
