Reed Sheppard
Reed Sheppard is a bench guard behind Fred VanVleet, and the early evidence points to a smaller role than last season. His knee is an added question for Saturday.
Role
Heavy (about two days old) reported 16 minutes in Wednesday's win over Dallas, down from the 26.2 per game he averaged in 2025-26. Fox Sports reported that he did not start the preseason finale, and that he is expected to have a sizable backcourt role off the bench as a secondary playmaker behind VanVleet. Heavy said Udoka called him unlikely to play Friday against San Antonio after bumping his knee. The league report called it a left knee contusion/bone bruise. The wire has him questionable for Saturday against the Hawks. I found no confirmed update after that wire report. I also found no current minutes tracker or starting-five page, so his usage rate and Saturday's starting five are not confirmed.
Fox Sports described him as a three-point threat and secondary playmaker. He had 17 points in 25 minutes in a preseason spot start against Dallas, with four threes on 10 attempts. He also played 30 minutes in the 2025-26 season's heavier-usage stretches. Houston Chronicle noted that he handled the ball at the second-highest rate among Rockets who played at least 500 minutes last season, so he can take on a bigger role if the team needs it.
Heavy argued that Houston's offseason frontcourt additions could leave him the odd man out of the main rotation. It said the 16-minute game did not look injury-driven. Fox Sports said it is unclear whether his minutes will be enough to matter, and noted five turnovers in the preseason spot start. Houston Chronicle said he is less dangerous as a passer than VanVleet and less careful with the ball.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is about minutes. One view is that he holds a sizable bench role as VanVleet's backup playmaker. The other is that the roster changes push him toward the edge of the rotation, with the 16-minute game as the first sign. Reporting does not settle which is right, and the knee adds uncertainty for Saturday.
Injury: GTD: assessed minor
Back injury, questionable vs. Boston, risk of missing 4th game
Day-to-day back issue that has already cost him games this season and is in question again for Monday; worth monitoring given reduced minutes trend, but no indication of a severe or multi-week issue.
What would change this: Monday's pregame status and whether minutes/role shrink further if he plays
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
