Trae Young

Consensus #43 · PG17 · tier 8Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Trae Young is Washington's starting point guard and primary playmaker, in a starting five with a lot of usage competing for shots.

Role

Starter in every lineup I found. Underdog NBA lineup alerts, relayed by hottakes.com in the past few days, had Young, Kyshawn George, AJ Dybantsa, Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr starting two regular-season games, against Charlotte and against Cleveland. SI's roster piece from about 12 days ago also lists him as the starting PG. The Craftednba depth chart snippet shows a projected 33 minutes with Bub Carrington as backup. That is a projection seen in a search snippet, and I did not fetch the page, so treat it as unverified. I found no current report of back-to-back rest plans, and no actual minutes or usage figures from this season. He has no injury designation.

The case for

He is the best passer on the roster, and he is paired with lob and pick-and-roll targets in Davis, Sarr and Ayton. SI frames him as the expert playmaker who feeds easy buckets to the young players around him. At media day he said that having several initiators lets him experiment with parts of his game he hasn't shown as much.

The case against

The starting five packs a lot of usage together, and one outlet expects growing pains over the nightly shot pecking order among Young, Davis and Dybantsa. Young has said himself the fit will take reps and won't come overnight. The offseason wire note adds that his trainer addressed leadership criticism, and it also mentions a quadriceps issue he has been working through. No current report says that quadriceps problem is a limitation.

Where analysts split

The open question is how shots and ball handling get divided among Young, Dybantsa, Davis and the other initiators, and whether that trims Young's scoring or assist volume. I found no analyst putting numbers on it, so this is a question the coverage raises rather than a debate with two named sides.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
