Tristen Newton

Consensus #183 · PG66 · tier 9Updated Oct 26

Newton is not on an NBA roster right now, so he has no NBA role this season unless a team signs him, and I found no report of one doing so.

Role

He has no NBA minutes, usage or starting job. The Sacramento Kings waived him on Oct 16 and he became a free agent on Oct 19, according to RealGM's transactions page. Hoops Wire's Oct 23 transactions log lists the same move. Before that he was a camp signee: Hoops Rumors said Sacramento had an open two-way slot and that he could win it. He did not. Hoops Rumors also said Stockton, Sacramento's G League affiliate, had acquired his rights, but I did not confirm whether he is playing there now. He has played nine total NBA games over the last two seasons, per Hoops Rumors.

The case for

The optimists point to his G League résumé. Hoops Rumors notes he made the All-NBA G League first team last season. He is a 6-foot-5 combo guard who was a consensus All-American at UConn and won two national titles. A team that needs guard depth could sign him, and Sacramento's earlier trade for his Stockton rights suggested it wanted him for the G League.

The case against

The skeptics point to four teams moving on from him in about two years. Indiana, Minnesota, Houston and now Sacramento have all cut him. He has played only nine NBA games in total, and no team currently holds his NBA rights. Nothing I found says a team is pursuing him.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement. I found no current analyst coverage debating his role. The open question is whether any team signs him, and the reporting is silent on that.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
