Tyler Kolek

Consensus #208 · PG76 · tier 7Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Kolek looks like the third point guard on a deep Knicks roster, a fill-in who plays when injuries or rest nights open minutes, and the preseason coverage I found does not show that changing.

Role

No current starting or minutes data found. Dated coverage says he fell to third in point guard minutes after the February trade for Jose Alvarado (Daily Knicks, about 87 days old). That piece expects Alvarado's return to keep him there and says that, barring injury, he will not be in the rotation. The Heavy piece from last season (about 217 days old) put him at 13.7 minutes per game before the deadline, then out of the rotation with stints in the G League. I did not read a current depth chart or a regular-season box score, so I can't give a usage rate or a confirmed starter.

The case for

He is a pure table-setter who sees the floor and makes the right pass, and he led the Knicks with five assists in the preseason opener. A Substack piece published today says he also had stretches of good defense in camp that surprised people. Daily Knicks says he averaged 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 8.4 assists per 36 minutes in 2025-26, with an assist-to-turnover ratio above three. It also says he has shot over 40 percent on spot-up threes across his first two seasons. If he adds a reliable pull-up jumper, Daily Knicks argues he could reshape the guard rotation.

The case against

The guard room is crowded, and an Empire Sports Media piece (about 76 days old) says he won't beat Miles McBride on defense or Jordan Clarkson as a scorer. It adds that his path requires coach Mike Brown to sit a more proven guard, which likely means rest nights and injuries. Daily Knicks says his pull-up twos and floaters were inefficient last season. It also suggests he may only get a real role by being traded.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is whether he can win steady backup point guard minutes in New York (Daily Knicks on the jumper and Empire Sports Media on the squeeze) or only gets them through injuries and rest, with a trade the likelier route to a real role (Daily Knicks). I found no current reporting that settles it. Our card shows 1 GP last season, which doesn't match the 2025-26 coverage above, so I have not used that line.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
