Alvin Kamara
A 31-year-old Kamara has been demoted to passing-down complement behind free-agent signing Travis Etienne, and an August MCL sprain has him behind schedule on top of it — he's a situational receiving back now, not the offensive hub.

Camp reporting (Jeff Duncan, Nola.com) had Etienne taking nearly all early-down reps with Kamara working the third-down/passing-down snaps, and the first preseason depth chart listed them as co-starters mostly as a courtesy. Etienne, signed to a four-year deal worth roughly $48-52M, is the volume back and the goal-line/red-zone option; Kamara's realistic path is a low-to-mid-30s snap share concentrated on obvious pass sets, plus change-of-pace carries. Kendre Miller is the other body in the room and would take third-down or relief work if Kamara is limited. Kamara's reworked contract (essentially one year, ~$6M with $3.5M guaranteed) signals the same thing the usage does.
He is still the best receiver in the room and Kellen Moore's offense throws to backs, so a route-heavy role can produce steady reception volume even with few carries. If Etienne misses any time, Kamara is the clear every-down replacement and reverts to workhorse touches immediately — that contingency is the main reason anyone keeps him. Optimists also note the reported knee injury was a sprain with nothing torn, so the ceiling isn't structurally gone.
Last season was career-worst across the board: 11 games, 657 yards from scrimmage, one touchdown, 3.6 yards per carry, 4.0 yards per touch. He has now had knee problems end each of the last two seasons and a third one cost him the preseason. With Etienne taking early downs and goal-line work, Kamara's touches and target share both shrink, which is a narrow path to relevance. Several outlets have him as an outright non-asset for the season, not just a downgrade.

Whether the passing-down role alone is enough to matter. One camp (FantasyPros' Derek Brown among them) treats him as a usable weekly flex in reception-heavy setups because the route volume survives the demotion; the other camp argues the receiving role has already eroded — the dump-offs and goal-line looks dried up last year — so without an Etienne injury there's nothing left. The concrete question: does Kamara keep the third-down job outright coming off the MCL, or does the layoff hand some of those snaps to Etienne and Kendre Miller permanently?
