James Cook III

Consensus #8 · RB5Week 9: at MIN, 1st vs RBQuestionableUpdated Oct 27

Cook is the Bills' clear lead back and has been treated as a top-tier workhorse in current coverage, with no injury designation, and the main caveat is that Ty Johnson takes some passing-down work.

Role

Draft Sharks has Cook at 45 of 68 snaps (66%) in the Week 6 win over the Raiders, with Ty Johnson at 12 and Ray Davis at 9. Earlier snap shares were 72% in Week 1 (FantasyData) and a season-low 59.3%, 35 of 59, against the Patriots (Draft Sharks). Draft Sharks attributed the Patriots dip to game script rather than a demotion. Johnson took every two-minute drill snap in that game and matched Cook's 15 routes on 19 snaps. A Yahoo Sports analyst said early in the season that Cook's route share was up while his touch pace was slightly below last year's. I did not find a target share for him. The wire note has him on 22 carries and 3 targets in the Raiders game. Josh Allen also takes some short-yardage touchdowns (FantasyData). Buffalo's bye is Week 7.

The case for

He has the lead role in a high-scoring offense, with 22 or more carries in two of his last three games reported. Draft Sharks has him as an RB1 in three of four weeks through Week 5, with RB3 in Week 6. FantasyPros' rest-of-season consensus ranks him RB5, within a range of RB4 to RB7 across six experts. FantasyData also pointed to 6.0 yards per carry through three games.

The case against

His snap share has dipped when the Bills trail or pass more. Johnson has taken two-minute and passing-down snaps, and Allen takes some goal-line scoring. Cook fumbled twice in Week 5, one of them costly. Early in the season a Yahoo analyst noted that his touches were on pace to fall short of last year's total even as his snaps rose.

Injury: Questionable: assessed ignore

Evaluated for head injury, returned to play

Cook was checked for a head injury but was cleared and returned to finish the game, playing through it including an additional carry. The report shows no ongoing issue, just a postgame procedural questionable tag.
