Javonte Williams
Williams is the clear lead back in Dallas for the rest of the 2026 season: his volume is secure, but his efficiency is weak and his touchdown total is carrying much of his output.

In Week 5 against Tampa Bay he played 51 of 60 offensive snaps (85%), his highest share of the season, and took 14 of Dallas' 15 runs, per Athlon/Yahoo citing PFF. Tyler Goodson got three snaps that game, after 11 and 16 snaps in the previous two weeks. NBC Sports (Oct. 9) says Williams saw all but one running back opportunity in Week 5 and sits in the top six in backfield opportunity rate through five games. ESPN's player page lists Israel Abanikanda, Malik Davis, Tyler Goodson and FB Hunter Luepke on the position group. I did not read a current depth chart or a current snap table, so I can't say who is RB2 right now. The Rotowire depth chart that surfaced in search was months old and I didn't use it. Williams signed a three-year, $24 million extension in February.
He has the workload of a bell-cow back in what NBC Sports calls one of the league's most potent offenses. He has six touchdowns through five games, including a one-yard score on the opening drive Thursday. Week 5's 85% snap share shows no backup is cutting into his work. Dallas also trailed 17-0 in the third quarter on Thursday, which cut into his carries. Better game scripts could bring those carries back.
He has averaged 3.8 yards per carry or fewer in four of five games, including two straight, per Rotowire, NBC Sports and ESPN. ESPN's player page shows him at 3.7 per carry on the season. NBC Sports says his value is being held up by touchdowns, and that more down weeks are likely unless Dallas fixes its ground game. Dallas also lost to a previously winless Tampa Bay team, and game scripts that go bad can shrink his carries.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is about efficiency, not role. NBC Sports and Rotowire accept the usage but doubt that touchdown-driven output can last on 3.7 yards per carry. The optimists point to the offense and his goal-line work. Nobody I found disputes that he is the lead back.
