Kenneth Walker III

Consensus #2 · RB2Week 9: vs NYJ, 23rd vs RBUpdated Oct 20

Walker is the Chiefs' clear lead back and a heavy-volume workhorse, with a possible modest trim in touches as the team works in a rookie.

Role

He is the lead back. The Seattle Times (via Union-Bulletin, checked Oct 20) says he had played 75% of snaps this season heading into the Seahawks game. ESPN's player page (checked Oct 20) shows 106 carries for 665 yards. Per ESPN, he had 19 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers, plus two catches on three targets. Chiefs On SI (about two days old) has him second in the NFL in carries per game and on pace for 425 touches. Rookie Emmett Johnson is the main competitor for work. In the HEAVY/Yahoo report (about 24 days old), a coach named Murray said Johnson is still learning and will keep getting more opportunities. I did not find a current snap or target split for Johnson, and I did not read a depth chart.

The case for

Walker is the Super Bowl LX MVP and the centerpiece of a Chiefs offense built around a stronger run/pass balance. The Seattle Times says he is averaging 133 yards per game, on pace for 2,261, which would top Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105. He is producing in big plays too: Chiefs On SI notes six runs of 20-plus yards, including a 76-yarder. Left tackle Josh Simmons has not played this season because of a back injury, and Chiefs On SI describes his return as impending, which could help the run game further.

The case against

The Chiefs have said publicly that they want to lighten his load. NFL.com ran a piece headlined about lightening his workload after 56 touches in two games, and Andy Reid spoke about keeping him fresh. A 425-touch pace is unheard of for a modern back. ESPN's fantasy blurb notes he has missed at least two games in three of his four seasons with Seattle, and Seattle used him in a time share in 2025. A rookie taking a growing share of touches could cut his volume.

Where analysts split

The question is how much Johnson actually cuts into Walker's touches. The Chiefs say they will ease the load and Johnson will get more opportunities. The Chiefs On SI report from about two days ago still has Walker on a historic workload and mentions only talk of slightly limiting his usage. I found no current snap data showing a real shift.
