RotoWire's tracker puts him at 16.5 touches per game and a 69% snap share (202 snaps). FantasyPros' count, from four games, had him at 66% of snaps. His snap share was 55% in the Week 1 Thursday opener, per FantasyData. Rookie Kaelon Black is the main competitor. He had more carries than McCaffrey in Week 1, and the two ended that game with equal touches. I did not find a current depth chart. The 49ers are undefeated per the RotoWire note.
When he is on the field he is still efficient: he scored on 11 carries and caught all three targets Sunday, and he had 18 touches and a touchdown against Denver on October 4. SI argued that Black taking the tough carries leaves McCaffrey fresher, with more work in space and as the top pass catcher. That could make him nearly as productive on fewer touches. A trailing, pass-heavy game script could also push his snaps back up. RotoWire's 69% snap share suggests he is still on the field for most plays.
The reduced workload looks deliberate. RotoWire says the club has been content to manage his work, and he told The Athletic that the team's talk of fewer touches is load management. At age 30, after 413 regular-season touches in 2025, the team has reason to protect him. SI notes that Black's emergence could cap McCaffrey's ceiling. He has yet to reach 20 touches in a game, and Black takes the between-the-tackles and closing-out work.
Where analysts split
The question is whether the split stays fixed or whether game script and the score bring his snaps and touches back toward 2025 levels. SI sees the split helping him through a bigger receiving role and fresher legs. RotoWire and the ESPN blurb frame the managed workload as a cap on his volume. Nobody I found has the team publicly committing to a number.
