Chase Brown
Chase Brown is the Bengals' lead back with a heavy workload, but his Week 5 game against Miami cut into that role, and the sources I found don't agree on why.
Role
Fantasy Football Calculator's news page, which quotes RotoBaller, had him at about 70% of snaps early in the season. It also had 49 carries and 10 catches through three games. The NBC Sports Week 5 note (dated Oct. 11) says he took a surprising backseat to Samaje Perine against Miami. Per the wire, he had 13 carries and 3 catches on 4 targets. I found no snap count for that game. Perine is the main competitor. A Yahoo preview about 65 days old says Brown's snap share dips when Perine is healthy. A depth chart and a target tracker were not read.
He is the clear RB1 with a three-down profile in a high-scoring offense. That is the Yahoo preseason view, and it holds regardless of how one game went. Cincinnati has moved him around, including out wide and in the slot. That gives him receiving routes beyond checkdowns, and Burrow has praised him. Even in a bad game he still had 13 carries and 4 targets.
The NBC note says Perine took more of the work against Miami, and Brown lost a fumble in that game. Through three games his production had lagged his usage: RotoBaller says his receiving has held him back. His rushing efficiency has been poor. CBS noted a 2.0 yards-per-carry Week 1. Perine's presence has capped Brown's snaps before. A fumble could also cost him touches.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Week 5's Perine-heavy split was a one-game, game-script blip or the start of a lasting timeshare. The preseason and early-season sources treat Brown as a locked-in 65% to 70% snap back. The NBC Week 5 note calls the Perine split a surprise. I did not find a source that explains it, such as a coach's comment.
