Chris Rodriguez Jr.

Consensus #120 · RB43Week 9: at BAL, 10th vs RBUpdated Oct 27

Chris Rodriguez Jr. is the Jaguars' backup power back behind Bhayshul Tuten, and his workload has swung from game to game, so he is a touchdown-and-carries depth piece rather than a settled featured back.

Role

Yahoo's snap-count pieces show 13 of 62 snaps in Week 4, 9 snaps (13%) in Week 5 against Philadelphia, and 21 snaps (30%) in Week 6 against Houston, where he led the team with 11 carries for 55 yards. Tuten still played 40 snaps (57%) in Week 6, and LeQuint Allen Jr. took mostly passing-down work in Week 5. FantasyData's depth chart page (undated, about six weeks old when indexed) listed Tuten first, Rodriguez second, Allen third and Ameer Abdullah fourth. FantasyData also noted he had no targets out of the backfield through that point, and the wire note adds one more target that he did not catch. I did not read a live depth chart, so treat that ordering as indexed, not current.

The case for

Head coach Liam Coen coached him at Kentucky, and The Athletic's Jeff Howe said not to be surprised if the power runner carves out an important role. He scored touchdowns in back-to-back games before Week 5, and Week 6 was his biggest workload of the year. Heavy's piece, as indexed, asked why he was getting carries over Tuten.

The case against

Analysts consistently call him the clear RB2 behind Tuten, with almost no passing-game role. ESPN's fantasy blurb says his role won't allow consistent output. Yahoo's Week 5 piece said Tuten was pulling away from a backfield that used to be shared, and Allen takes the passing downs. His Week 6 spike came in one game and does not by itself show a lasting change.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether the Week 6 jump to 21 snaps and 11 carries is a new, larger share of the ground work, or a one-game blip in a backfield where Tuten is the lead back and Allen handles passing downs. Coverage I found did not settle that.
