This is a full-unit D/ST with no individual snap or target role. Its value comes from sacks and takeaways. RotoBaller (Oct 9-12) has the unit tied for third in sacks (14 through four games) and in the upper half of the league in EPA/play. After that, it beat Miami 31-24 in Week 5, which made the Bengals 3-2. RotoBaller listed its next matchups as Baltimore in Week 7, Tennessee in Week 8 and Pittsburgh in Week 10. I did not read a Bengals depth chart or injury report, so I name no individual defenders.
RotoBaller says the unit has improved significantly since last season. It had at least four sacks in three of its first four games, and it ranked as the No. 1 fantasy D/ST after two weeks (RotoBaller, about two weeks ago). Its Week 5 matchup was against the Dolphins, whom RotoBaller called arguably the worst offense in football. RotoBaller's Week 5 No. 2 ranking for the Bengals produced 10 fantasy points. RotoBaller also lists the Titans (Week 8) and Steelers (Week 10) as upcoming games to watch.
Sportsnaut (Oct 13) ranked the Bengals 15th among NFL defenses and noted that the Dolphins offense is the least talented in the NFL. Against Miami, the Bengals allowed 14 points and 136 yards over the final three drives. ESPN's pre-Week 5 D/ST outlook also listed Cincinnati among its 10 offenses to avoid. Week 7 is against the Ravens, and Sportsnaut expects plenty of points in that game. The strong early numbers also came against a soft stretch of opponents.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether the early sack and fantasy production is real improvement or came from weak opposition. RotoBaller points to the sack total and EPA/play as signs of real improvement. Sportsnaut's mid-pack ranking and its caveat about the Dolphins lean the other way. The Week 7 Ravens game is the first test against a stronger offense.
