Emanuel Wilson
Wilson is Seattle's lead early-down back while rookie Jadarian Price is on injured reserve, and he is a volume-driven option on an offense whose run game is being widely criticized.
Role
With Price on IR (NFL.com, about 15 days ago, 'at least the next four games'), Wilson has been the main ball carrier. He had 21 carries in Week 4 against the Chargers, with George Holani getting 7 carries and the more receiving-oriented work. The wire note has Wilson at 14 carries and one target against Denver. The Seahawks' own site lists him at 87 carries for 303 yards (3.5 per carry) with 5 catches through 6 games. Earlier snap data had Wilson and Holani at 24 snaps each in Week 3, and Holani took all the third-down snaps in Week 1. I did not find a current depth chart or a snap share for the last two games, so I can't give one.
Wilson has the carries while Price is out. One outlet (Yahoo/SI, about 28 days ago) expected him to take the bulk of early-down and goal-line work if Price missed time. He has scored in games already this year, including a rushing and a receiving touchdown against the Chargers. He also said he has grown into a bigger role since arriving on a non-guaranteed one-year deal.
The efficiency is poor, at 3.5 yards per carry, and a Yahoo piece from 3 days ago says the Seahawks have no run game. Holani has taken the passing-down work, and Wilson had only one target in the latest game and dropped it. Price is the first-round pick, and Seattle's own coach said the team still believes in him. When Price returns, Wilson's carry count could fall back to a share of the work.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is over how much of the work Wilson keeps once Price is healthy. Preseason reporting from The Athletic's Andrew Destin had Price on first and second downs, Holani on third downs and goal line, and Wilson only mixing in. Wilson has outproduced that role in Price's absence. Whether he stays ahead of Holani and Price on early downs, or goes back to the occasional role, hasn't been reported, and neither has Price's return date.
