Emmett Johnson
Emmett Johnson is a rookie fifth-rounder who is the clear No. 2 behind Kenneth Walker. He gets a small share of offensive snaps, adds kick return and special teams work, and his value rises sharply only if Walker misses time.
Role
He is the RB2 behind Walker. Through four games SI reported Walker at 75% of offensive snaps (196) and Johnson at 26% (69). ESPN's latest game note had Johnson at 18 offensive snaps to Walker's 45. Rotowire logged 13 snaps in Week 3 and 17 in Week 4, with no carries in Week 4. Per Rotowire and RotoBaller, his receiving work has grown: three targets and two catches in Week 6, and two catches on three targets in the Week 7 loss to Seattle per our wire note. He also returns kickoffs. Preseason reporting had him ahead of Emari Demercado and Brashard Smith for the No. 2 job. I did not read a current depth chart page, so that ranking comes from reporting, not a chart.
He has forced many missed tackles on few touches: SI cited 10 on 14 touches. Andy Reid said Johnson could carve out a bigger role as the season goes on, and described a nice balance between him and Walker that keeps both fresher. Walker's pace of over 400 touches (FantasyData) could prompt the team to lighten his load. Johnson's receiving role is growing, and he is the obvious successor if Walker is hurt.
The team is 5-0 through Week 6 with Walker dominant, and the Week 7 loss to Seattle was its first loss. Johnson's touches are small: Week 4 had one touch and Week 6 had three carries for six yards. FantasyData says that as long as Walker is healthy he is unlikely to see enough work to produce for fantasy. Johnson's value comes mainly from the handcuff case, not standalone use.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Reid's talk of a balance becomes a real workload split. Optimists, such as the SI piece and the Rotowire note on Reid, expect Johnson's role to grow, perhaps on passing downs. Others, such as FantasyData and RotoBaller, see a stash with no standalone value while Walker holds about three-quarters of the snaps. Nobody I found disputes that he is the No. 2 back.
