Mason enters this season in the exact same 50/50 Minnesota backfield that defined 2024 — a rugged, downhill runner who leads on early downs and near the goal line but is not the passing-game answer, splitting carries almost evenly with Aaron Jones with no clear plan yet to change that.

Officially co-listed as a starter with Jones on the post-cutdown depth chart; last season the two nearly split touches (159 carries for Mason to Jones' overall workload, with Mason getting the bulk of carries inside the 20 — 29 to Jones' 14 — and outscoring him 6 TDs to 3). Mason is used almost exclusively as a runner; he's not trusted in pass protection, so third-down and two-minute snaps go to Jones, capping Mason's receiving work to a handful of catches. Rookie Demond Claiborne is in the room too, but analysts see him as more of a threat to Jones' share than to Mason's.
Mason was efficient last year by advanced metrics (top-tier rushing yards over expected) and got the lion's share of goal-line work, giving him a real path to touchdown equity even in a timeshare; some analysts argue Minnesota actually under-used him in 2025 and could lean on him more this time around.
He's ceiling-capped by design — his complete absence from passing downs means even a big rushing day rarely turns into a true breakout box score, and as long as the touch split with Jones stays roughly even, neither back gets true bell-cow volume.

The real debate is whether the 2025 workload split (Mason getting goal-line/early-down volume, Jones getting passing-down and some big-play work) simply repeats again, or whether Minnesota shifts more overall volume toward Mason given his better per-touch efficiency — some outlets call him an undervalued 'sleeper' on that basis, others still frame him as more handcuff than standalone option.
