A third-round 2026 pick out of Indiana, Black opened camp as the clear No. 2 running back behind starter Christian McCaffrey. His preseason workload was minimal (four carries for 28 yards, zero catches on one target against the Raiders), consistent with a limited role as the primary backup/change-of-pace option rather than a real share of touches while McCaffrey is healthy. He was not viewed as a passing-down threat in college, catching only four receptions in each of his final two seasons at Indiana, which likely caps his role even in a McCaffrey-injury scenario to early-down/goal-line work rather than a full three-down workload.
He was graded as a top-tier back on San Francisco's draft board (Kyle Shanahan called him their No. 2 overall running back) despite lacking a Combine invite, and if McCaffrey — who is 30 and has an extensive injury history — misses time, Black would likely inherit the lead role in Shanahan's efficient rushing scheme.
His complete lack of receiving production in college and a minimal preseason workload suggest he's a two-down, ceiling-limited option who may need a change at the very top of the depth chart just to see meaningful volume, and even then third-down/passing-game work could go elsewhere.
