Mitchell is the Chargers' change-of-pace and receiving back in a three-man committee. His workload climbed through Week 4, then dropped back in Week 5.
Role
Omarion Hampton is the listed starter and got 15 touches in Week 5. Mitchell and Kimani Vidal each had nine. In Week 1 Mitchell played 17 offensive snaps to Hampton's 43 of 68 (CBS). In Week 3 it was 27 snaps to 23 (Chargers Wire; FantasyData's Week 3 recap has Hampton three snaps ahead, so the two reports conflict). In Week 4 Mitchell led the backs with 26 snaps to 25 each for Hampton and Vidal (FantasyPros). Week 4 was his biggest game: 10 carries, five catches on six targets. Week 5 was six carries and three catches on four targets. I found no Week 5 snap counts. RotoWire (Oct 6) said OC Mike McDaniel wants to lean on him. He also returns kicks. No injury designation. The Week 5 wire note says Ladd McConkey (foot) was injured, which could open more passing-game work, but I found no current update on McConkey.
RotoWire's argument is that the coaching staff wants him on the field. His snaps rose each week from 17 in Week 1 to a backfield-high 26 in Week 4. He scored at least 11.3 PPR points in back-to-back games against the Bills and Seahawks (RotoWire). He works as a pass catcher and in space, with big-play speed. If Hampton keeps failing to show explosiveness, more work could come his way (CBS).
It is a true three-way committee on an offense that has been losing games. FantasyPros says committee backs in struggling offenses have limited appeal. Week 5 was his least productive game since Week 1, and Hampton out-touched both backups. CBS says his ceiling stays limited while Hampton is active. A Bolt Beat column (3 days ago) argues that giving Mitchell Hampton's snaps hurts the run game and raises Mitchell's injury risk, so the split could shift back toward Hampton.

Whether Mitchell's Week 4 snap lead was the start of a lasting lead role or a one-week blip in a three-way committee. RotoWire reads the staff as committed to using him heavily. CBS and Bolt Beat expect Hampton to remain the lead back and the main ball carrier, with Mitchell and Vidal as complements.
