Kimani Vidal
Vidal went from a near-nonexistent role in Weeks 1 and 2 to a rising piece of a three-way Chargers backfield, and he has not yet shown he is the clear lead back.

Weeks 4 and 5 snap shares show a near-even three-way split with Keaton Mitchell and Omarion Hampton. Week 4 snap counts were Mitchell 26 and Vidal 25 (per SI and Fox Sports), with Hampton also at 25 (Fox Sports). Underdog's Oct 4 snap shares were Mitchell 38%, Vidal 37% and Hampton 32%. SI's Week 6 waiver piece had Mitchell on 34% of offensive snaps and Hampton on 30% in Week 5. It did not give a Vidal figure in the part I read. Vidal had four offensive snaps in Week 1 and seven in Week 2, with no carries in either game. Per the wire report, he had eight carries, two targets and three kick returns in Week 5. SI says he led the team in rushing that day. I did not read a depth chart page, so I can't say who is listed first.
SI's snap-count column calls Vidal a Week 4 winner, with a growing role and an ability as a runner and pass blocker that is helping the offense. SI's waiver piece says his snaps, touches and opportunities have risen every week since the first two games, and that the struggling offense may believe it has found something in him. SI also says he could emerge as the top option in Los Angeles, since both the team and Hampton have disappointed. Fox Sports reads the team as willing to give him more looks. He also has kick return work, which adds touches.
The sample is small. SI notes he ran for just 31 yards across the first four weeks. His 57-yard Week 5 leaned heavily on one 42-yard run. The same piece says he could fade into complete obscurity. The backfield is crowded, and Mitchell and Hampton still play almost as much. Vidal's snaps were flat from Week 4 to Week 5 by SI's count (26 to 25), even though his production rose. Bolts From The Blue noted that his 2025 stretch as the lead back was inconsistent.
Where analysts split
The question is whether the Chargers, under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, will consolidate the backfield around Vidal, or keep a three-way split that includes a struggling Hampton and Mitchell. Waiver-wire writers at SI treat Vidal's ascent as real but fragile. Some fan reaction on X argues that Hampton, the 2025 first-round pick, should be used more. I found no beat-writer or coach statement on a plan. I also found no source on whether Hampton's lower snap count is a coaching choice or a health matter. The SI snap article marks his name with an asterisk and I did not see an explanation.
