Kyle Monangai
A genuine co-starter in Chicago's two-back rotation coming off a 783-yard, five-TD rookie year, but he lost a big chunk of the summer to a hyperextended knee and is now working back into a split he no longer fully controls.
Role
Second-year back sharing the backfield with D'Andre Swift under Ben Johnson, the same near-even arrangement that produced the only NFL duo to each clear 750 rushing yards in 2025 (Monangai: 169 carries, 783 yards, 5 TD, 18 catches, 164 yards). He is the between-the-tackles/short-yardage half of the tandem; Swift is nominally the starter and holds the clearer passing-down and explosive-play role. Roschon Johnson is RB3 and a special-teams contributor, with Brittain Brown/camp bodies behind him — nobody in that group threatens the top two when healthy. Practical expectation once fully cleared: a rotational-to-near-equal carry share with limited receiving volume, and standalone value that swings hard on goal-line and short-yardage assignment.
He earned the split on merit as a seventh-round rookie, the coaching staff has publicly said it trusts him, the knee was reported structurally sound (initial tests plus MRI), and the roster contains no new back added to take his work. Swift is 27-ish, on an expiring situation and has never carried a full every-week workhorse load in Chicago, so any Swift absence hands Monangai a true lead-back role in a much-improved offense.
He is still the No. 2 by depth chart, he missed a soft-tissue issue early in camp and then several weeks with the knee, so he has had almost no time to build on last season or claim a bigger piece of the rotation. Backs who miss the runway often open the year at a reduced snap count, and his pass-game usage (18 catches in a full rookie season) gives him a low floor when the carries are split.
Where analysts split
Whether the lost camp time actually costs him share, or whether the 2025 rotation simply resumes once he's cleared — i.e., does he come back as a true co-starter or as a ramp-up rotational back behind Swift for the first few weeks, and who gets the short-yardage/goal-line work in the meantime?
