This is a team unit with no snap or target split to report. Week 8 is at the Rams. Rotoballer (Oct 27) puts the unit in its Tier 6 at 21st, SI ranks it 26th, and Sportsnaut has it 18th. Football Nation lists the Chargers defense with 11 sacks and 5 interceptions, a minus 5 turnover differential, and the Rams defense with 10 sacks. I did not read a depth chart or a snap report, so I have no individual usage to give.
The pass rush and takeaway numbers are not bad. Football Nation has the Chargers at 11 sacks and 5 interceptions, and Sportsnaut's ranking at 18th is the most favorable of the three. The offense is also a drag in a way that can help the defense. Rotoballer has it last in EPA/play and points per game and last in giveaways, which can hand opponents short fields. The same Rotoballer piece says the Chargers offense gives up 3.5 sacks per game. A Chargers offense that struggles is one more reason the Rams D/ST projects well, not this one.
The offense is a liability for the defense. Rotoballer notes the Chargers rank dead last in EPA/play, giveaways and points per game, so the defense will likely be left in bad field position and bad game scripts. Football Nation says Stafford has 14 touchdowns and a 67.3 percent completion rate behind a well-protected pocket. Sportsnaut also says the trade deadline could strip the unit: Khalil Mack, Donte Jackson and possibly Teair Tart may be moved.
Where analysts split
The ranking gap is modest, from 18th (Sportsnaut) to 26th (SI), with Rotoballer at 21st. The question behind it is whether the defense's raw pass rush and takeaways can outweigh the offense's giveaways and the Rams' protected quarterback. A secondary issue is whether deadline trades gut the front. Nobody I found calls this a high-end play.
