Mike Washington Jr.

Consensus #151 · RB51Week 9: at SF, 22nd vs RBUpdated Oct 27

Washington is a rookie fourth-round backup to Ashton Jeanty whose usage has been uneven: he had a season-high workload in Week 6, then a modest one in Week 7. He is a handcuff and a rotational piece, not the lead back.

Role

He is the RB2 behind Jeanty. His snaps have swung from 5 (Week 5 vs. NE, per Rotowire via CBS, Oct 12) to a season-high 23 in Week 6 vs. BUF, about 35 percent of snaps (Review-Journal, Rotoballer). In Week 6 he also worked as the passing-down back, which the Review-Journal called a rarity in the first five games. Last Sunday he had 6 carries for 27 yards and no catches (ESPN). Dylan Laube played 23 snaps in Week 5 and is the other back named on the depth chart in the CBS blurb, which was indexed months ago. I did not read a current depth chart or a Week 7 snap count.

The case for

Coach Klint Kubiak confirmed Washington earned more reps after leading the team with 43 yards in Week 6 (Review-Journal). He leads Raiders backs at 4.9 yards per carry, with a 36-yard touchdown run against the Saints. Against the Rams he led the team in rushing yards on a day Las Vegas ran for just 48 (ESPN). The offense ranks 31st in rushing efficiency at 3 yards per rush, and Jeanty has been dealing with foot and ankle problems. Optimists see a workload that could keep growing.

The case against

Even in his best game he was clearly the backup, and his Week 7 role looked like his usual rotational one. ESPN's note says he is pushing Jeanty for rushing work but not enough to start. He has just 3 catches on the season, and his snaps fell back to 5 in Week 5 when Jeanty played. Skeptics say Week 6 was one game where the Raiders limited Jeanty because of his health, not a lasting split. Washington also missed practice with foot and back issues before Week 7 (Rotoballer, Yahoo).

Where analysts split

The question is whether Week 6 (about 35 percent of snaps, passing-down work) is the new baseline or a one-off tied to Jeanty's health. Blog coverage (Just Blog Baby) liked the near-even split of touches. ESPN and Rotoballer still treat him as a backup or handcuff. I found no Week 7 snap share, so it is unclear whether the bigger role carried over.
