The Giants defense has started well on takeaways, but it has few sacks and has lost Brian Burns for the season. Current coverage treats it as a matchup-dependent unit, not a set-and-forget one.

This is a team defense, so there are no snaps or touches to report. The Giants lead the league with six interceptions but have a league-low three sacks, per DraftKings Network on Oct. 6. That same piece has them ninth in Pro Football Focus overall defense grades and eighth in coverage grades. A Yahoo PFF review of the Week 5 game against Washington singled out Abdul Carter (6 pressures for a second straight week, second sack of the year), D.J. Reader against the run, Shelby Harris and Kayvon Thibodeaux (3 pressures). A DraftSharks page lists the bye as Week 8. I did not read a depth chart, so I make no claim about starters.
The defense has produced highlight plays against strong offenses: the DraftKings piece says the first two came against Dallas and the Rams. It also held Tennessee to seven points and 262 total yards in Week 3. Carter's pass rush is improving and Reader has firmed up the run defense. A Commanders.com piece from about four days ago calls the group legit, physical and well schemed. Empire Sports Media has the Giants 3-1 and alone atop the NFC East on a defense that keeps covering for the offense's mistakes.
The sack total is the lowest in the league, and Burns, who was second in sacks last season, is out for the campaign. Interceptions are a volatile source of points and may not hold at this pace. Empire Sports Media says the Giants are leaning on the defense to erase quarterback Jameis Winston's turnovers. The Commanders piece also says conservative offensive game scripts keep games close, which limits sack opportunities.
Where analysts split
The split is whether the interception-heavy production holds up without Burns and with so few sacks. DraftKings and the Commanders-side voices lean on the coverage grades and scheme. The sack drought and Burns' absence point the other way. I found no single analyst laying out both sides, so this is my reading of the coverage.
