Hampton is the nominal lead back on a winless Chargers offense, but he is one of three backs in a committee, and early-down work is his floor.

The Week 6 loss to the Chiefs, which the wire note covers, gave him 7 carries and 4 catches, 11 touches to Vidal's 7 (FantasyPros, checked Oct 20). FantasyPros' expert note says he was on the field for only two routes the week before and called him an early-down option. The Underdog snap tracker on Oct 4 had Mitchell at 38%, Vidal at 37% and Hampton at 32%, after Hampton led the group at 42.0% on Sep 27. FantasyData's depth chart lists Hampton first, Mitchell second and Vidal third, but I read that from a search snippet and did not fetch the page. Competitors for the work are Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal. Harbaugh said it is "hard to predict how many a player is going to get" (FantasyData). I have no snap share for Week 6.
He is a 2025 first-round pick and, in some posts, the most talented back in the room. He still leads the group in carries or rushing share in some weeks, and the four catches in Week 6 show he can get receiving work. A play-caller change or a simplified offense could lift his share. Fans note the team is not using its best player enough.
The snap trend runs against him, and his efficiency is poor: 2.6 yards per carry in Week 6, and a fumble in each of the first two games (per a tracker post). Mitchell and Vidal are taking snaps, and the Chargers are 0-6 with an offense described as struggling under coordinator Mike McDaniel. Trailing game scripts can favor the other backs. FantasyData's earlier note called him a touchdown-dependent flex.
Where analysts split
Whether Hampton's snap decline is a temporary effect of the committee and game scripts, or a lasting demotion behind Mitchell and Vidal. Coach Harbaugh would not predict his snaps. Part of the criticism is aimed at McDaniel's usage, not at Hampton's ability.
