A pass-catching complementary back in a Washington committee where Jacory Croskey-Merritt appears to be the intended early-down lead — White's value rides on receiving work and on whether he can take the job back outright.
Role
Signed a one-year deal in March and was listed as the No. 2 back on Washington's unofficial camp depth chart behind Croskey-Merritt. The expected split is JCM on early downs and near the goal line with White handling passing downs and two-minute work, though White has feature-back experience (top-five in touches in 2023, ~71% snap share and 14.6 touches per game during a 2025 stretch when Bucky Irving was out) and coaches praised him in the spring. Competition is Croskey-Merritt primarily, plus other backs on the roster; in the passing game Washington lacks an obvious second option behind Terry McLaurin, which is the source of White's target upside.
He is the most proven receiving back in the league by rate — 40-plus catches in each of the past four seasons and a career catch rate above 89% on 100-plus targets, the best in NFL history at that volume. If he owns third downs and hurry-up, he has a stable weekly floor, and if Croskey-Merritt stumbles or gets hurt, White has already shown he can absorb a full workload (he was a weekly RB2/low-end starter on volume alone when Irving missed time).
He is inefficient as a runner — 4.3 yards per carry, roughly 1.5 yards after contact per attempt, a 1.2% explosive-run rate and a modest missed-tackle rate during his 2025 lead-back stretch. He has been genuinely a feature back for only one of four seasons, the team appears to want the younger back leading, and if White loses goal-line work his touchdown equity largely disappears. His production comes in small chunks rather than spike weeks.
