Rico Dowdle
Dowdle is the number two back behind Jaylen Warren, a complementary piece with a real passing-game and goal-line role, not the early-down lead the preseason talk suggested.

Week 7 against New Orleans: Draft Sharks had Warren ahead 40 snaps to 28, with seven plays that had both backs on the field, often with Dowdle in the slot. SI put Dowdle at 44% of offensive snaps. A GitHub research issue (not a beat source) counted 15 opportunities for Dowdle to Warren's 22, and Dowdle tied for the team lead with six targets. In Week 7 Warren had 67% of RB rush attempts, 69% of third-down snaps and all three short-yardage carries. Draft Sharks credits Dowdle with goal-line work. Dowdle missed three games with a toe dislocation and returned in Week 6, when he played 21 of 79 snaps. He played Week 7 through a knee issue. Cleveland is next in Week 8, and ESPN says Pittsburgh may stay ground-heavy.
Dowdle looks healthy now, caught all six targets in Week 7 and is used in the slot. He has goal-line work and is getting ten to fifteen touches. SteelerNation sees 30% to 40% of snaps as a good use of him. The preseason read, from ESPN's Dan Graziano, was that he would get early-down work. Draft Sharks says his receiving and goal-line roles make him more than a handcuff. If Warren missed time, Dowdle would be the next man up, though no game this season has tested that with Warren out and Dowdle active.
Warren has taken over the lead role: 561 rushing yards on 102 carries (5.5 per carry) and 24 catches for 294 yards, per Draft Sharks. McCarthy has called Warren the featured player, per SteelerNation. Dowdle's Week 7 line of 9 carries for 41 yards was modest. He has no touchdown in four games played and 118 rushing yards on 31 carries. Draft Sharks calls him a risky flex only in a pinch against two stingy run defenses. His snap share has swung from a 75/25 split in Warren's favor in Week 6 to 40/28 in Week 7, so the sample is small.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Week 7's expanded role (15 touches, slot work, six targets) is a lasting 35% to 45% share or a one-game bump tied to the game script and his return to health. Draft Sharks and ESPN treat it as a backup role with some appeal. SteelerNation expects 30% to 40% of snaps. Earlier Fox reporting said McCarthy still envisions a shared backfield. The Week 6 split was 75/25 in Warren's favor.
