Samaje Perine
Perine is Chase Brown's backup and the third-down and pass-protection back. Last Sunday against Miami he had his best game of the year, and one Yahoo piece says that could start a shift, but I found no confirmation that his role has changed.
Role
Perine is the RB2 behind Chase Brown. Against Miami he had 14 carries to Brown's 13, plus a red-zone receiving touchdown, per the wire note and Yahoo Sports (published about a day ago). Before that game his usage was small. A FantasyData item (undated in the result, so I can't place it in 2026) said he had not topped four touches in any game after eight in the opener. A Rotowire note on a Week 3 loss to Pittsburgh had him at 18 offensive snaps to Brown's 40. That note read as 2026 but is undated, so treat it with caution. Tahj Brooks is listed behind him on that Rotowire depth chart, which I did not fetch directly. I did not find a current snap share for the Miami game.
Yahoo Sports argues the Miami game points to a possible backfield shift. Perine out-carried Brown 14 to 13 for 68 yards, while Brown managed 39 yards and fumbled at a costly moment. The bulls also point to his standing as a trusted pass protector. Cincinnati's offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher has called him one of the best pass-protecting backs in the NFL. That trust could keep him on the field if Brown keeps struggling.
This was one game, and the Yahoo piece itself notes that his production on his snaps had not earned much faith before Sunday. Rotowire's earlier read was that he stays rotational unless Brown misses time. He is 31, and the touchdown came on a role-specific red-zone catch, which may not repeat.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Brown's fumble and a 39-yard day cost him carries, or whether Miami was a one-off for Perine in a 31-24 win. Yahoo sees a possible shift, while Rotowire's earlier take kept Perine as a backup unless Brown is hurt. I found no coach comment or beat-writer report on how the Bengals will split carries going forward.
