Tank Bigsby
Bigsby is out of the picture for the near term: he is on IR after core muscle surgery, and when he returns he is a backup who matters mainly if Saquon Barkley's health keeps being an issue.
Role
Nothing is expected from him while he is on IR. Fox Sports (about 5 days old) says the earliest return is Week 9 against the Giants on Nov. 8, and ESPN's report cited sources hoping for six weeks or less. In Week 4 against the Rams he had 14 carries for 55 yards after Barkley (hamstring) left early. The competitor named in current coverage is Will Shipley, whom Fox and Sporting News flag as a possible Week 5 starter. The Eagles also signed an ex-Texans RB, whose name I did not read. Barkley is listed week-to-week. I did not find a current snap share or depth chart, so I give none.
Bigsby showed he can carry the load when Barkley is out. He ran 13 times in Week 2 against the Titans and 14 times against the Rams in Week 4. Last season he averaged 5.9 yards per carry on 58 attempts. If Barkley's hamstring keeps him out into November, a healthy Bigsby would return to the top of the backup pecking order for the work behind Barkley.
He is hurt, he needs surgery, and his return is not confirmed. Shipley is taking his work now. Last season, with Barkley healthy, Bigsby's role shrank, and RotoWire noted that Shipley out-snapped him in some games. Athlon in the preseason said he has real competition for the RB2 job this year, citing fumble history and a new offense.
Where analysts split
The open question is how fast Bigsby comes back and whether he retakes the RB2 job from Shipley once healthy. I found no analyst split on this, only fragments, so I would not call it a debate. The timeline comes from the 'six weeks or less' hope in ESPN's report, against the four-game IR minimum in Fox's note.
Injury: IR: assessed avoid
Abdominal injury, core muscle surgery, on IR
Bigsby needs core muscle surgery and is on IR, out at least four games with earliest return Week 9 against the Giants. He is not rosterable in the interim.
What would change this: Any update on surgery recovery or practice activity as Week 9 approaches
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
