Trevor Etienne
Etienne is a depth back and return man who was just activated from injured reserve, and I found no reporting that he has a defined offensive role this season.
Role
Fox Sports' player page (indexed within the last few days) says the Panthers opened his 21-day practice window to add depth behind Chuba Hubbard and AJ Dillon, with Jonathon Brooks (abdomen) still on injured reserve. Yardbarker, citing ESPN's Mike Kaye about two days ago, reported that Carolina activated him ahead of the trip to Philadelphia. Fox also says he was set to be the starting kick and punt returner. I found no 2026 snap-share or touch figures. Last year he was the No. 3 back behind Rico Dowdle and Hubbard, and CBS and Rotowire logged only a handful of offensive snaps per game for him in the later weeks, plus the return job. Dowdle is gone this year. I did not read the current Panthers depth chart, so I can't say where it lists him.
The backfield is thin: Brooks is on injured reserve, Hubbard has had a hamstring issue this year per Fox, and Dillon is the other veteran. Etienne was first on the field in the preseason finale and had touches on each of the first three drives, with Hubbard and Brooks resting. He also holds the return job, which keeps him on the field, and his college scouting reports mentioned receiving and pass protection.
Fox's preseason note says he was outperformed after exiting that game by Miles Davis and Dillon. A Rotowire piece from August 7 called him an afterthought in Carolina. As a rookie he went long stretches with almost no offensive snaps, and CBS read that as a firm No. 3 role. He has just come off injured reserve (an ankle issue per the wire note), and I found no reporting that he has passed Dillon.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Etienne or Dillon is the No. 2 back behind Hubbard. The sources I found don't state either side. They describe Etienne as depth behind Hubbard and Dillon and say little about how the work will be split. Whether he gets passing-down snaps beyond returns is unreported.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
