Spears is the Titans' passing-down and receiving back behind Tony Pollard, and his Week 5 usage was a big jump that may owe much to the game script.

Week 5 vs. Houston: Spears played 34 of 63 offensive snaps (54%) to Pollard's 30 (48%), per Yahoo/Athlon and Titans Wire citing PFF. He ran 27 routes and had 2 carries. Pollard had 14 of the team's 17 rushing plays and ran 14 routes. In Week 4 at Baltimore, Pollard out-snapped Spears 34-22. Through four games, Spears had 94 snaps to Pollard's 121. Rookie Nicholas Singleton is also in the backfield. I found no current report of his snaps or touches.
Athlon says the Week 5 snaps point to a split shifting toward the pass game, with Spears as Cam Ward's safety valve. He caught all nine targets and earned a 91.1 PFF receiving grade, the best on the offense. Preseason coverage had Brian Daboll's new offense raising the ceiling on his role. Pollard is also in the final year of his contract and has been floated as a trade target (SI, 4 days ago).
Pollard still owns the early-down and rushing work. ESPN's preseason projection calls Spears a receiving specialist unlikely to reach consistent fantasy value. Ward dropped back on 46 of 63 snaps against Houston, so game script drove part of the usage. Spears also lost a first-half fumble, which Athlon says can cost a back touches. Before Week 5 he had 7 yards on 2 carries and 1 catch on his lone target at Baltimore.
Where analysts split
The split is whether Week 5 shows a lasting shift toward Spears or a trailing-game-script spike. Athlon reads it as a shift, while Titans Wire still calls him the passing-down back behind starter Pollard. A second question is whether Pollard is traded, and nothing I found confirms that.
