Tyler Allgeier
Allgeier is a committee back whose work depends on Jeremiyah Love's ankle: he shared the lead role with Bam Knight while Love was out, and coach Mike LaFleur has said he will always complement the lead back.
Role
Love (high ankle sprain) missed Weeks 6 and 7, and Allgeier split the work with Bam Knight in both. In Week 6 against the Rams he had 18 carries for 38 yards and one catch, and NBC Sports counted 19 touches for him to Knight's 17. In the Week 7 loss to the Broncos he had eight carries and three catches. With Love healthy, the Week 4 snap counts (PFF via Athlon) gave Allgeier 36 of 66 snaps (55%) to Love's 30. He played 27 of 41 pass plays and Love 16 of 25 run plays, so he gets the passing-down snaps. Early in the year the split was roughly 60-40 in his favor in Weeks 1 and 2, and Love took over as lead back in Week 3 (55 snaps to Allgeier's 31). James Conner is on injured reserve. I did not find Love's return timetable, and I did not read a current depth chart.
Allgeier has been on the field more than any other Arizona back this season, at 50.8% of snaps per SI, and he led the backfield in Weeks 1 and 2 and in carries in Week 6. LaFleur called him "extremely smart" and trustworthy in pass protection, which is why he stays on the field in passing situations and late in games. If Love's high ankle sprain lingers, he keeps a volume role.
LaFleur said publicly that Allgeier will always complement "that next guy" and that no single back can handle a full-time role, so the ceiling is a committee share. Knight was the more efficient back in Week 6 (15 carries for 80 yards against Allgeier's 18 for 38), and Allgeier had seven yards on three carries against the Lions in Week 5. Once Love is healthy, Allgeier's early-down work shrinks again. His Week 7 line, eight carries for 19 yards, was not strong.
Where analysts split
The split is whether Allgeier keeps meaningful touches once Love returns, or whether he drops to a passing-down and late-game role. Analysts also disagree on whether he or Knight is the better back while Love is out. NBC Sports called him a bench stash after Week 5, then a volume-based RB2 play for Week 6.
