Zach Charbonnet
Charbonnet is a stash-and-wait case, not a contributor: he opened 2026 on reserve/PUP after February ACL surgery and cannot play before Week 5, with a rookie first-rounder now in front of him.
Role
Zero role for at least the first four games — he is not on the 53 and cannot practice while on reserve/PUP. Seattle's active backfield is rookie Jadarian Price (first round, No. 32) as the lead back, with George Holani reportedly getting a "heavy dose" and Emanuel Wilson behind him. Kenneth Walker left for Kansas City, so the pre-injury projection was Charbonnet as clear starter on a run-heavy defending-conference-champion team; whenever he is activated he has to take that work back from Price rather than inherit it. Also note Seattle has used Charbonnet as a real receiving and goal-line back historically (730 yards and 12 TDs on 184 carries in 2025), so if healthy the passing-down and short-yardage work is his most likely entry point.
The talent and situation are still there: he was the presumed starter before the injury, he scored 12 times in 2025, and Macdonald has sounded genuinely optimistic about the rehab timeline. Price is a rookie who missed the entire preseason with soft-tissue nagging and has never carried a full NFL workload, so a Week 5-8 return could find a wide-open lead job on a good offense, and stashing costs nothing while he sits on reserve/PUP.
A February ACL surgery means a return anywhere from Week 5 to midseason or later, and the first weeks back after an ACL are usually a limited-snap ramp, not a workhorse role. By then Price may have established himself, and a team defending a title has no incentive to rush a back off the shelf. Seattle also has not given a concrete practice-return date, which is the tell that this is a long runway.
Where analysts split
Not whether he plays eventually, but when and into what — the concrete split is whether Charbonnet reclaims lead-back duties once activated or comes back as the third-down/goal-line complement to Price, and analysts also disagree on whether Week 5 is realistic at all versus a midseason return given the late-February surgery date.
Injury: PUP — assessed avoid
ACL recovery, on reserve/PUP
Charbonnet remains on reserve/PUP and can't practice until at least Week 5, then needs a three-week window before activation, so he's unrosterable for fantasy for at least the next several weeks.
