Week 8 Injury Read: Gibbs, Smith and a Thin Cardinals Backfield

Who's trending out, who's just maintenance, and the real game-time calls for Week 8, plus the Panthers-Packers players who lock first.

Trending out

Season over, no debate: Jalen Hurts (blood clots, IR), De'Von Achane (torn ACL), Terry McLaurin (torn patellar tendon, placed on IR Wednesday), Jaxson Dart (meniscus/MCL surgery). Drop or dynasty-stash. Davante Adams had hamstring surgery with a 6-to-10 week timetable; McVay is hopeful for the early side, which points at roughly Week 12. Nothing about that is confirmed.

Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) has not practiced since last Wednesday and did not practice again Wednesday. Treat him as out unless he works Thursday or Friday; Tyler Herbert takes the role if he sits. Kyle Monangai was on a stationary bike during warmups and off the field for the open portion of practice with turf toe that has already cost three games. Avoid. David Montgomery (groin) is on bye with a return date listed after this week.

DeVonta Smith is the painful one. He has missed three of the last four games with the hamstring and was a non-participant at Wednesday's walkthrough. He needs to practice Thursday or Friday to have a chance Monday night at Washington. Plan around him.

Routine: start them

Ja'Marr Chase sat Wednesday with ankle and rest, and the reporting frames it as maintenance. Start him against Tennessee. Amon-Ra St. Brown tweaked the ankle Sunday; Campbell said he should practice Thursday, so Wednesday's absence was scheduled. CeeDee Lamb practiced fully with a quad bruise and is a non-issue. Baker Mayfield was a full participant and already played through the thumb.

Lamar Jackson took all the first-team work Wednesday, his first full session since the high-ankle sprain, and is on track at Buffalo. No official confirmation from Minter yet, but start him. Ladd McConkey was a full participant with no restrictions; he still needs independent neurologist clearance, which has not been reported as granted. A.J. Brown was limited with knee and ankle but played 92 percent of snaps in his last game. Brock Bowers, Dalton Kincaid, Jakobi Meyers and Michael Wilson were all limited Wednesday with issues the reporting treats as manageable.

Game-time decisions and the pivot

Jahmyr Gibbs: DNP Wednesday with a newly reported shoulder issue. He is the bell cow after the Montgomery trade, so a sit guts your week. If Thursday or Friday is another DNP, you need Jonathan Taylor, James Cook III or Derrick Henry already in the lineup, not on your bench.

Saquon Barkley sat Wednesday's walkthrough with hamstring plus a new back issue from Monday. He says the hamstring is fine. Friday's designation decides it; he plays Monday night, so you can wait. Rashee Rice was limited in his first practice back since Week 4: genuine uncertainty, pivot to Tee Higgins or Garrett Wilson. Breece Hall was limited after four missed games and may share with Allen even if active. Tyler Warren returned limited after two games out; Sam LaPorta or Colston Loveland if he does not upgrade.

The Cardinals backfield is a mess: Jeremiyah Love limited, Tyler Allgeier DNP. Do not start either blind. DJ Moore was limited in a no-contact jersey and may need to take contact before clearing. Jaylen Waddle attended practice but logged as a non-participant with a chest injury. Emeka Egbuka (concussion plus foot) still needs neurologist clearance: avoid. Aaron Jones Sr. is day-to-day with a knee aggravation. Carnell Tate missed Wednesday but Saleh downplayed it. Kenny Gainwell was held out with a hip issue, which lifts Irving and Tucker.

Thursday night

Carolina at Green Bay kicks off Friday 00:15 UTC, so these lock first. The only pool player involved is Jonathon Brooks, and he is on IR, not cleared for drills, with a minimum of two more games before he is eligible. He was seen jogging at practice, which is progress and nothing more. Hubbard remains the lead back and Dillon has the complementary work.

We have no other designations from this game in the material. If you are deciding on a Panthers or Packers player not named here, our report is thin and you should check the team's own report before lock rather than take a guess from us.
