Week 8 Memo: Chase the Bad Defenses, Fade the Bears in Seattle
Kyler Murray and the Patriots backfield get the softest matchups on the board, while Detroit and Chicago's pass catchers run into walls. Plus the waiver names worth a bid.
The lineup calls
Start the matchups that are actually generous. Kyler Murray goes to Detroit against the most forgiving defense in the league against quarterbacks, and Sunday's line against the Saints (24 of 30, 229 yards, a touchdown, 10 rushes for 51 yards) shows the legs are still part of the job. He was named Minnesota's starter in mid-August over J.J. McCarthy and nothing I found disputes it, though I have not read a current depth chart or snap tracker. Hunter Henry draws Miami, 31st against tight ends, and he has four straight games with double-digit PPR scoring. In the Week 7 loss to the Bears he ran 25 routes, 71% of the team's, with a team-high seven targets and a snap share reported at 76% (SI) or 78% (Rotowire). Dallas Goedert at Washington, 30th against tight ends, is the same idea with a weaker floor: he led Philadelphia in targets in Week 5 (6 of 9, 38 yards) on 43 snaps, far ahead of Johnny Mundt's 20, but the work is check-downs and Tanner McKee is now the quarterback.
Miami is 32nd against running backs, which makes the Patriots backfield the most appealing part of this slate. Rhamondre Stevenson played 37 snaps, 69% of the offense, in the Thursday loss to Chicago with six carries for 22 yards and five catches for a career-high 93 yards. That receiving role is the reason to start him; the rushing volume is small. TreVeyon Henderson left Sunday's game against the Raiders with an ankle injury after four carries for 22 yards and a 16-yard catch. I found no report on severity or timeline, and the testing results were not public in what I read, so treat him as unresolved rather than out. Josh Jacobs gets Carolina, 31st against backs, in Green Bay's Thursday home game. In his Week 7 return he played 35 snaps (54% per ACME Packing Company) with 16 touches and a receiving touchdown, and ACME said he was not on a pitch count. MarShawn Lloyd's 22 to 24 snaps make him a flex dart in that matchup, not more.
The fades are concentrated in two games. Minnesota is the stingiest defense in the league against both quarterbacks and tight ends, which puts Jared Goff and Sam LaPorta in the uncomfortable column. The Big Lead ranks Goff QB14 and a sit in one-QB leagues; Sportsnaut likes the spot. If you have a clean alternative, use it. LaPorta is Detroit's unquestioned TE1 (59 snaps, 89%, in Week 5) and his target share has been climbing, so he stays in unless you are deep at the position.
Seattle is first against wide receivers and second against quarterbacks, and that lands on Chicago. Caleb Williams has thrown for 300 or more in back-to-back games for the first time in his career, but this is the worst draw he has had since returning from the hamstring injury. Luther Burden III leads the Bears in targets (43 through six games, 22.2% share) on a 61% snap share, behind Rome Odunze's 94% in Week 7. Burden stays in flex-sized lineups on volume. Odunze, with a 16.53% target share, is a bench candidate this week. Jameson Williams against Minnesota, second against receivers, is the same call: his 14.7% target share and FantasyPros ECR of WR24 do not survive this matchup comfortably.
The waiver wire
Makai Lemon is the add with the clearest path. He was at 72% of offensive snaps through six games and ran a team-high 45 routes on 49 dropbacks against Carolina, then led the Eagles in targets, catches and yards on Monday with DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) out. Statchasers had his snap share up 13 points over the last three games even before the injuries. The catch: Smith is out with a listed return of 11/01, Wicks has no confirmed date in what I found, and the quarterback is McKee.
KC Concepcion Jr. is the volume bet. PFF had him at 55 plays, 79% of snaps, with 10 targets and three carries in Week 7 at Tennessee. He is the primary slot in a short-area role, and NBC Sports described Jerry Jeudy as being phased out. Note the wire has him limited in Wednesday's practice with calf and quad issues, and whether that affects Week 8 at Pittsburgh is not confirmed. Caleb Douglas returned from a four-game ankle absence and played 44 of 65 snaps (about 68%) in Week 7, second among Miami receivers behind Malik Washington's 52, but on three targets and about a 14% share with Malik Willis throwing. Two long touchdowns can hide a thin role.
Emanuel Wilson is the lead early-down back in Seattle while Jadarian Price is on IR (NFL.com, about 15 days ago, at least four games). He has 87 carries for 303 yards and five catches through six games, with George Holani handling receiving work. Efficiency is poor, the matchup is not (Chicago is sixth-toughest against backs), so he is a bye-week body. Tre Tucker played 82% of snaps with a team-high 12 targets in Week 7 against the Rams, but his season line is 66.5% of snaps and a 16.6% share behind Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty. FantasyPros has him WR48 rest of season. One week does not settle that.
Kaelon Black is on bye in Week 8 but is the roster-worthy handcuff: 47% of snaps in Week 7, No. 2 job won in camp, and Christian McCaffrey left the Falcons game with a thigh issue, with a later report calling it a mild hamstring strain. Streamers: the Jacksonville Jaguars defense hosts Indianapolis off a bye with a schedule Roto Street Journal calls the league's easiest, though their recent fantasy scoring has been thin. Chase McLaughlin has made every field goal he has attempted this year and has no competition for the job. Omar Cooper Jr. is a stash only: he is on IR with a high ankle sprain, has been eligible to return since Week 6, and the Jets have not announced an activation or a date.
Byes ahead
Week 8 takes out New Orleans, Houston, San Francisco and the Giants. That is Jaxson Dart, David Montgomery, Christian McCaffrey, Travis Etienne Jr., Cam Skattebo, Nico Collins, Malik Nabers and Chris Olave off your board at once. If you are starting two of those, the matchup boosts above are where to shop: New England's backfield at Miami, Green Bay's at home against Carolina, Murray in Detroit.
Week 9 is the easy one: Pittsburgh and Tennessee, with nobody inside the top 60 affected. Do not burn a FAAB bid solving a problem you do not have.
Week 10 is the one to plan for now, and it is brutal: Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Denver and Chicago. That list includes Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams, Saquon Barkley, Bucky Irving, Colston Loveland, Emeka Egbuka, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and Luther Burden III. If you roster Williams and Burden together, or Barkley and Smith, you need a Week 10 answer before the wire thins out. Buy it this week, not in two weeks.
Injuries that matter
Jalen Hurts is on IR with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, on blood thinners, and the reporting says he is not expected to play again in 2026 or push for a late-season return. He has no fantasy value this year. Tanner McKee is starting in his place, beginning with Monday Night Football against Dallas, per Yahoo/USA Today (Oct. 26), and Yahoo reported Andy Dalton declined an offer to return. I have no snap or target figures for McKee. De'Von Achane has a confirmed torn ACL and is out for the season: drop him outside dynasty.
Lamar Jackson is the one to be careful with. He has missed three straight games with a high-ankle sprain and was ruled out shortly before each of the last two despite day-to-day language. Do not start him on vibes; watch whether he practices limited or full, and watch for an early ruling like the prior two weeks. Saquon Barkley is a compounding problem rather than a tweak: the hamstring has lingered for weeks, he aggravated it Monday, a related back issue took him out early, and he finished with seven carries. His workload was already trimmed before that. Practice participation is the only thing worth acting on.
DeVonta Smith is ruled out with a hamstring and a listed return of 11/01. Rashee Rice (hamstring) and Breece Hall (quadriceps) both carry the same expected return date of 11/01, which is after this week; treat all three as unavailable for this slate. Jeremiyah Love has missed two games with an ankle issue and was slated to practice Wednesday, and he will likely need multiple clean practices to play at Dallas.
The good news is short. Amon-Ra St. Brown tweaked an ankle but played 78% of snaps and posted a season-high 153 yards in that game; he rested Wednesday and is expected to practice Thursday and Friday. Confirm those practices, then start him against Minnesota. Christian McCaffrey's issue is reported as a mild hamstring strain, not a quadriceps injury, with the team expecting him back after the Week 8 bye for Week 9 against the Raiders. He is on bye anyway, so the only thing to do is check his practice status when San Francisco returns.
